This work is a special work that is an offshoot of my work Master’s House. It was conceived with a good friend of mine named Pxvce. We were thinking about Soul Food, our deep love for this fried treat, and the legacy of slave food. “Soul food” originated during slavery. African Americans were fed scraps and leftovers discarded by their European counterparts. Slave owners reserved the best nutritional foods for themselves.

As survivors, they took what was given to them and made meals for their families.  They made beauty through gift giving and serving one another. We celebrate the foods that pass the culture, that contain and transfer memories of people and communities. However, this style of cooking was birthed out of survival. Since then, these same dishes were passed from generation to generation. We celebrate the foods that passes through our culture. We celebrate memories of people and communities. Food make from the heart and shared will always be a cornerstone of existence as humans. I look forward to the evolution of soul foods will bring forth beauty. Think of this drum stick as a moment of reflection, critique and pure celebration.
